Moving Appliances and Electronics Abroad"
by Jay Bernstein, Video Overseas, Inc.

So you are moving overseas. Congratulations!!

Many exciting adventures await you and your family in your location. But when it comes to choosing electronic equipment for your new location, there are a number of details you should consider. Following are questions and answers to help you appropriately move your appliances overseas.

Q Can I take my American appliances with me when I move to England?

A Some of your existing appliances can be moved, but you need to match all appliances with the appropriate transformers because voltage and Hertz frequency in the United States differs from most European communities.

Q Will my American television, video and camcorder work in Africa?

A Televisions and videos will not receive local television broadcasts in countries with different broadcasting systems. Multi-system televisions and videos are recommended because they allow for automatic switching of the broadcasting system and voltage and can be used in any country in the world.

Q Can I use all my appliances with transformers?

A Most appliances can be used with transformers. Some appliances that are not recommended for use overseas are: microwave ovens, irons, radio alarm clocks, vacuum cleaners, electric cooking ranges and washers and dryers.

Q Can I use all my existing and new appliances with the same plugs?

A An appropriate plug adapter is necessary to connect new appliances to a destination country's wall outlet.

Q Would I be able to take my American telephones to Germany?

A An appropriate transformer and telephone adapter are required, plus a power adapter for the country in order to use American telephones.

Q How do I connect our existing appliances into one transformer when I move to Geneva?

A A surge protector with six outlets is recommended to connect multiple existing appliances into one transformer.

Q If I have a 110/120 Volt appliance, can I plug it in the wall outlet when I move to Spain?

A An appropriate local adapter plug for Spain will allow appliances to be directly plugged into the country's wall outlets.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Items generally considered to be a poor return on investment when building or renovating a home are swimming pools, saunas, outside ground entrance to the basement, finished basements and electronic gadgets (i.e., a gate to a home or a fence for a pet).
